Candida Höfer’s (b. Eberswalde, 1944; lives and works in Cologne) shots of deserted libraries, opera houses, concert halls, churches, and museums have made her a member of the international photographic avant-garde. Together with Andreas Gursky, Axel Hütte, Thomas Ruff and Thomas Struth, she studied in the first photography class of Bernd Becher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. The works of Candida Höfer have been exhibited at documenta 11 and in 2003 she represented Germany at the 50. Biennale di Venezia alongside Martin Kippenberger.

Candida Höfer was invited to photograph the spectacular architecture of the Elbphilharmonie ahead of its official opening. With 82 meters, the depicted escalator is the longest in the world, which leads visitors to the public plaza in 37 meters above ground. The edition is released on the occasion of the book Candida Höfer – Editions 1987–2020. It is the first publication to gather all editions of Candida Höfer, providing a representative cross-section of her oeuvre.
