Michael Williams (b. Doylestown, Pa., U.S., 1978; lives and works in Los Angeles, Ca.) is known for paintings whose source materials have been subjected to both analog and digital processes in an effort to render the fragmented nature of our existence today. Composed on the canvas or on a computer screen, his works show the influence of art history and pop culture while leaving room for unexpected events that shape their genesis.<\/p>\n
During the 2020\u20132021 lockdown, the artist created six large-format collage paintings for Lokremise in St. Gallen, Switzerland. To make these modern history paintings, he mounted paper printouts on canvases and then reworked the pictures with paint. They are, in short, classic collages, as in the exhilarating days of DADA, when the photographic image from newspapers and illustrated magazines first transmigrated into art. The exuberant wealth of detail in Williams\u2019s works makes them a singular condensed portrait of a time of severe constraints, when the gaze turned away from the outside world and toward the universe of the mind.<\/p>\n
